The introduction of electric guitars quite literally changed the face of popular music. Since their invention in the early 20th century, these instruments have grown to become some of the most popular instruments in the world. Nearly every genre of pop music has incorporated the guitar in one form or another.
While earlier prototypes did exist, Leo Fender is generally credited with making electric guitars a mainstream instrument. His mass-produced Esquire guitar (later changed to the Telecaster) was an instant success among guitar players of the era. It was especially popular in the world of country music, and remains so today.
Today, electric guitars are everywhere. Musicians from genres ranging from country to reggae have found the guitar to be an amazingly versatile instrument. And as more musicians grow up with musical instruments, new ways of playing the guitar are being discovered every year.
