1954 Fender Dual 8 Professional Steel Steel Guitar Now In Fayetteville
Sunrise Guitars prides itself on finding the best instruments for our customers, both new and used. Owner, Don Nelms, recently picked up a 1954 Fender Dual 8 Professional Steel Steel Guitar, serial number #2751, while traveling through Texas. Fender made this model of lap steel from 1946 through 1957. The instrument has been clear coated over the original and the case has been painted over, but all of the parts are original. It comes with the original case and optional 3 legs. If you take a closer look at this instrument, an interesting story begins to unfold.
When taking it apart for cleaning and inspection, employee Larry Stark noticed a signature and date inside the instrument. It reads “Mary 4-7-54.” This very well could be Mary Lemus, a Fender factory employee. She began working at Fender in 1954 as an assembler, eventually becoming a final assembly supervisor. Her signature very well could have appeared on various instruments from that era, most notably, Pink Floyd guitarist, David Gilmour’s Fender Stratocaster with the #0001 serial number. Here’s a link to the article discussing the Stratocaster and “Mary.”
