Previous to the 1950’s, the only option for a bass player was the stand-up, also known as the double bass. However, the invention of bass guitars during the mid 20th century forever changed the bass in popular music. They became an instant hit with bass players across American and eventually the world.
One of the main advantages bass guitars had over the standard double bass was simple convenience. A bass guitar was lighter, easier to carry, and took up much less room on stage as well. In addition, because they were designed to plug into amplifiers, they were also capable of producing a much greater volume of sound.
Today’s bass guitars are available in a host of differing configurations. In most cases, they resemble an electric guitar, only on a slightly larger scale. They can have anywhere from four to eight strings, and in rare occasions even more. Because there are so many varieties, most experts recommend trying several in order to find the one that’s most comfortable for you to play.
