Acoustic Guitars

The guitar is arguably one of the most popular musical instruments in the world. There are few modern genres of music in which the guitar does not play a significant role. The versatility and unique character of the instrument have not only changed popular music over the last century, but have also created a multi-million dollar industry along the way. Each year in America, thousands of electric, bass and acoustic guitars are sold to professional and burgeoning musicians alike.

Guitars are available in many different designs and varieties. From the soft, demure classical guitar to the loud, often brash electrics, the range of possibilities within the line of instruments is nearly infinite. Add to this the ever-expanding world of digital effects, and one can see the endless sound options that are available to the musician. It is this kind of versatility that has taken the guitar to the forefront of the modern music industry.

Acoustic guitars can be found in the vast majority of music stores in this country. Not to be confused with classical guitars, which differ in several ways, the acoustic guitar is a staple of musicians and composers. Their soft, yet crisp sound is ideally suited to small, intimate gatherings, as well as for songwriting or simply wasting time.

These instruments were first made popular by jazz and blues artists that needed a guitar that could project and cut through the noise of the surrounding musicians. Previous to the acoustic guitar, most guitar players relied on the traditional classical guitar, which has a much smaller body and uses nylon strings. In order to generate greater sound volume, the acoustic was designed with a larger sound box (body) and incorporated steel strings, which were much brighter and could be heard over the rest of the band.

Of course, eventually even these were considered “too soft” and the electric guitar was soon born. The electric guitar has the advantage of utilizing an external amplifier, which can be used to produce huge quantities of sound if required. Many of the early versions (up to the 1970’s/80’s) are considered “vintage guitars” and are actively sought out by collectors around the world. Soon after the introduction of the electric guitar, the electric bass guitar was also invented. This instrument became an instant hit with bass players due to its compact design and ability to generate much larger volumes of sound.
